They explained an alloimmune form of membranous nephropathy in neonates born to mothers with a deficiency of neutral endopeptidase, a proteins expressed on podocytes, to which the mothers had been sensitized during prior pregnancies. To identify the mark antigen in individuals with idiopathic membranous nephropathy, we used circulating antibodies from adults with this disease to detect normal glomerular proteins by using Western blotting. Subsequent evaluation by using mass spectrometry and confirmation with the use of protein-particular reagents allowed for the identification and characterization of the predominant proteins detected by these circulating antibodies. Strategies Serum and Kidney-Cells Samples We collected and stored serum samples from individuals with membranous nephropathy, those with other glomerular or autoimmune disorders, and normal handles .
